MMP2 and MMP9 Activity Is Crucial for Adult Visual Cortex Plasticity in Healthy and Stroke-Affected Mice

Ipek Akol et al.

Summary: The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays a crucial role in neuronal network development and plasticity. Proteolytic cleavage of ECM and cell surface proteins is important for regulating plasticity. MMP2 and MMP9 are enzymes involved in proteolysis and their activity is critical for adult visual plasticity.

Differential Brain and Cerebrospinal Fluid Proteomic Responses to Acute Prenatal Endotoxin Exposure

Tik Muk et al.

Summary: Chorioamnionitis is a risk factor for preterm birth and can lead to neurodevelopmental delay and cognitive disorders. This study used pigs as a model to investigate the effects of prenatal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure on the proteome in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain tissue at birth and postnatally. The results showed changes in CSF protein levels at birth, but most of these changes resolved a few days later. The hippocampus exhibited high neuronal plasticity in response to perinatal inflammation. The findings suggest that CSF protein expression at birth may predict later structural brain damage in preterm infants exposed to various types and durations of chorioamnionitis-related inflammation in utero.

Alternative splicing of neurexins 1-3 is modulated by neuroinflammation in the prefrontal cortex of a murine model of multiple sclerosis

Elisa Marchese et al.

Summary: Mounting evidence suggests that immune-mediated synaptopathy and splicing regulation play crucial roles in cognitive decline in Multiple sclerosis. Splicing regulation is a dynamic process that modulates synaptic protein expression to control neuronal connectivity. Studying these mechanisms may lead to potential therapeutic targets for limiting cognitive decline in MS.

Low cerebrospinal fluid Amyloid-βeta 1-42 in patients with tuberculous meningitis

Giacomo Stroffolini et al.

Summary: Cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in patients with Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) are indicative of inflammation, blood brain barrier damage, and impairment in amyloid-beta metabolism. A beta may serve as a prognostic marker in TBM, supporting the routine use of available neuromarkers. This study is the first to demonstrate such low levels of A beta 1-42 in TBM.

Cerebrospinal fluid markers in incident pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis: a nationwide study

Kyla A. McKay et al.

Summary: This study found that CSF markers were not associated with relapse rate but were related to higher disability scores in pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis patients. Pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis patients more commonly exhibit evidence of IgG production in the CSF compared to adult-onset cases.
