Breath acetone change during aerobic exercise is moderated by cardiorespiratory fitness

Karsten Konigstein et al.

Summary: In this study, exhaled breath acetone (BrAce) levels were measured in high and lower-fit individuals during submaximal aerobic exercise. The results showed that high-fit individuals had significantly higher BrAce levels during exercise and a higher increase rate in BrAce concentrations in the post-exercise phase compared to lower-fit individuals. This indicates a stronger exercise-related activation of fat metabolism in high-fit individuals.

The correlation between breath acetone and blood betahydroxybutyrate in individuals with type 1 diabetes

Gus Hancock et al.

Summary: The study found a correlation between breath acetone levels and blood ketone levels in individuals with type 1 diabetes, allowing for categorization of breath acetone levels into normal, elevated, and 'at risk' levels. This suggests that a breath acetone test could be a simple, non-invasive substitute for capillary ketone measurement in type 1 diabetes.

Summary: Breath analysis using mid-infrared cavity-enhanced direct-frequency comb spectroscopy offers rapid and accurate detection and monitoring of biomarkers in exhaled breath. The technology, combining frequency comb, high spectral resolution, and sensitivity enhancement, allows for the detection of various breath biomarkers with strong carbon-hydrogen-bond spectral signatures.

Summary: The protocol outlines a standardized workflow for noninvasive analysis of VOCs within breath using SIFT-MS, aiming to advance disease detection and monitoring. With this protocol, a large number of breath samples can be analyzed in a short time, enabling direct compound quantification without the need for calibration curves.

The peppermint breath test benchmark for PTR-MS and SIFT-MS

Summary: A major challenge in breath research is the lack of standardization in sampling and analysis. The Peppermint Experiment proposed a test utilizing a standardized intervention to explore disparities in breath research across different analytical platforms. The study found large variations in both inter- and intra-dataset, indicating that biological variability plays a key role in the absorption, metabolism, and excretion of compounds in breath.
