Flow liquefaction instability and the permissible range of fractional order of sand

Shunxiang Song et al.

Summary: This technical note analyzes the permissible range of fractional order in modeling flow liquefaction of sand. The authors propose a state-dependent fractional elastoplastic model without predefined state parameters and simulate a series of test results for different sands under flow liquefaction. The permissible range of the fractional order is analyzed by evaluating the second-order work for predicting flow liquefaction instability of sand, suggesting that the fractional order should be less than two.

Liquefaction Modeling for Biocemented Calcareous Sand

Yang Xiao et al.

Summary: A thermodynamics-based constitutive model is developed for calcareous sand treated by microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) to describe the effects of biocementation and its degradation by cyclic shearing. The model successfully predicts the effects of MICP treatment on the cyclic behavior of sands, and proposes a two-stage degradation of bonding between sand particles for improved predictions.

Influence of linear coupling between volumetric and shear strains on instability and post-peak softening of sand in direct simple shear tests

A. Lashkari et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of volume change boundary conditions on the instability and post-peak softening of sand, revealing that volumetric expansion intensifies instability susceptibility while volumetric contraction reduces vulnerability. Experimental data analysis using Hill's second-order work criterion predicts relational trends for instability lines, normalized peak shear strengths, and maximum pore-water pressure ratios depending on the coupling between volumetric and shear strain rates. A simple state-dependent constitutive model is found to accurately predict relational trends in sand specimens experiencing instability and post-peak softening under different degrees of linear coupling between volumetric and shear strains.
