First detection of Amblyomma variegatum and molecular finding of Rickettsia africae in Sardinia, Italy

Elisabetta Pintore et al.

Summary: The first detection of a male Amblyomma variegatum tick infesting a sheep on the island of Sardinia and the presence of Rickettsia africae in DNA extracted from this tick are reported. The authors suggest that the tick's presence is likely due to migrating birds from Africa. This incidental finding highlights the potential risk of establishment of these ticks in the region and the importance of continued monitoring for public health.

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on birds migrating to the island of Ponza, Italy, and the tick-borne pathogens they carry

Robert E. Rollins et al.

Summary: This study highlights the role of migratory birds in the spread of tick species and tick-borne pathogens outside their endemic range. 16 captured birds from 10 different bird species on Ponza Island in Italy were found to carry ticks, with some ticks testing positive for Rickettsia and Borrelia species.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus in Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks, Tunisia

Wasfi Fares et al.

Summary: Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) has been found in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from northwestern Tunisia, marking the first report of TBEV in ticks from North Africa within the Palearctic region. Further studies are needed to assess the public health significance of TBEV in North Africa.

Where to find questing Ixodes frontalis ticks? Under bamboo bushes!

Olivier Plantard et al.

Summary: Tick-borne diseases in Europe have a complex epidemiology that involves various species of vertebrate hosts, vectors, and pathogens. A poorly known tick species, Ixodes frontalis, was found to have high density populations under bamboo bushes, likely due to providing birds with a favorable roosting place sheltered from predators and wind. This discovery may have implications for the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases.
