Global distribution of respiratory syncytial virus A and B infections: a systematic review

Karla Cantu-Flores et al.

Summary: This study provides a systematic review of global and continental patterns of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) circulation, shedding light on the distribution and changes of RSV A and B genotypes. The study identifies two circulation patterns for RSV and reveals a decrease in genotype diversity after 2000.

Molecular typing and epidemiologic profiles of human metapneumovirus infection among children with severe acute respiratory infection in Huzhou, China

Lei Ji et al.

Summary: In this study conducted in Huzhou, China, it was found that hMPV is a significant respiratory pathogen in children, especially during winter and spring seasons and in children under 5 years of age. The prevalent genotypes were identified as A1, B1, and B2.

The Prevalence and Genetic Characterization of Human Metapneumovirus in Bulgaria, 2016-2019

Neli S. Korsun et al.

Summary: A study in Bulgaria examined the prevalence of hMPV among patients with acute respiratory infections and found it to be significant, especially in young children aged 0-4 years. The study also revealed varying infection rates of hMPV in different respiratory illnesses and demonstrated year-to-year changes in prevalence and genetic diversity of circulating strains.

Comparative analysis of spatial-temporal patterns of human metapneumovirus and respiratory syncytial virus in Africa using genetic data, 2011-2014

John W. Oketch et al.

Summary: The study found similar patterns of spread of RSV and HMPV in Africa, with regional clustering and similar genotype dominance between neighboring countries. Sequences from different African sub-regions formed separate clusters, suggesting independent introduction of HMPV and RSV variants in Africa from the global pool, and local regional diversification.

Human Metapneumovirus Infection and Genotyping of Infants in Rural Nepal

Garrett A. Perchetti et al.

Summary: In rural Nepal, multiple genotypes of HMPV circulate simultaneously with an alternating predominance of a single genotype during different seasons. The most frequently detected genotype was HMPV-B, and both genotypes showed similar viral loads. Clinically, patients infected with HMPV-B had longer cough duration and more general respiratory symptoms compared to those infected with HMPV-A.

Zhibo Xie et al.

Summary: In Luohe, China, HMPV was detected in 7.1% of patients hospitalized with severe acute respiratory infection during 2017-2019, with the virus being most commonly found in young children. The predominant HMPV genotype A2c variants showed continued geographic spread, with 111 nt and 180 nt duplications being prevalent.
