A new cluster of West Nile virus lineage 1 isolated from a northern goshawk in Spain

Pilar Aguilera-Sepulveda et al.

Summary: The West Nile Virus has been actively circulating in Spain, causing annual outbreaks in birds, horses, and humans. A new strain of the virus, named Spain/2017/NG-b, was isolated during a disease outbreak in captive raptors in 2017, showing distinct genetic characteristics from previously circulating strains in Spain and neighboring countries.

Clinical, pathological and virological aspects of fatal West Nile virus infections in ten free-ranging goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) in Germany

Sina Feyer et al.

Summary: This study reports ten cases of confirmed West Nile virus (WNV) infection in free-ranging goshawks admitted to the Small Animal Clinic of the Freie Universitat Berlin in 2019. The goshawks presented with symptoms such as obtundation, poor body condition, and neurological abnormalities, with most being juveniles and females. In addition to WNV infection, concurrent diseases and injuries were also found in these birds.

Widespread Circulation of Flaviviruses in Horses and Birds in Northeastern Spain (Catalonia) between 2010 and 2019

Sebastian Napp et al.

Summary: The surveillance in Catalonia has detected flaviviruses beyond WNV, with a widespread circulation of viruses like WNV and USUV. Chickens and horses could be sentinels for these viruses, but current diagnostic techniques have limitations. There is overlap between WNV and USUV in some regions, but no significant geographical aggregation was observed, and human infections have not been reported so far. Zoonotic flaviviruses like WNV, USUV, and TBEV should be monitored within a One Health framework.

Unprecedented increase of West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease, Spain, summer 2020

Lucia Garcia San Miguel Rodriguez-Alarcon et al.

Summary: Cases of West Nile neuroinvasive disease in Spain increased significantly in summer 2020, with the majority of cases in the southwest region developing into meningoencephalitis and resulting in fatalities. Reduced vector control activities may have contributed to this surge. Public health measures such as vector control and awareness campaigns were effective in reducing transmission, highlighting the importance of ongoing vector control activities.

Summary: The Serbian national integrated West Nile virus surveillance program in 2018, funded by the Serbian Veterinary Directorate, aimed to detect WNV circulation early and reported to public health service. The program successfully indicated the spatial distribution of the risk for humans and showed sensitivity to early detection of WNV circulation in the environment.

First Autochthonous West Nile Lineage 2 and Usutu Virus Infections in Humans, July to October 2018, Czech Republic

Hana Zelena et al.

Summary: The study presented epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory findings of five Czech patients diagnosed with autochthonous mosquito-borne diseases, including four with confirmed West Nile virus (WNV) infections and one with Usutu virus (USUV) infection, from July to October 2018. It documented the first human outbreak caused by WNV lineage 2 in the Czech Republic, as well as the first neuroinvasive human disease caused by USUV, indicating the simultaneous circulation of WNV and USUV in the country.
