Pursuit of chlorovirus genetic transformation and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing

Eric A. Noel et al.

Summary: Genetic and molecular modifications of large dsDNA chloroviruses have the potential to accelerate the research on virus-encoded proteins, but practical methods for genetic transformation and genome editing in these viruses remain limited. Initial experiments using preassembled Cas9/RNP complexes show promising results in editing the chlorovirus genome, indicating the need for further research in this area.

Visualizing active viral infection reveals diverse cell fates in synchronized algal bloom demise

Flora Vincent et al.

Summary: In this study, the quantification of active viral infection in marine phytoplankton revealed the significance of viral-induced cell lysis on the marine ecosystem. The use of high-throughput single-molecule messenger RNA in situ hybridization allowed for a mechanistic understanding of biotic interactions in the ocean.
