Revealing hidden diversity among upside-down jellyfishes (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae: Cassiopea): distinct evidence allows the change of status of a neglected variety and the description of a new species

Edgar Gamero-Mora et al.

Summary: This study analyzes Cassiopea medusae specimens from the Western Pacific and identifies two distinct species based on morphological and molecular evidence. It also provides new insights into the systematics of Cassiopea and highlights the underestimation of species richness in the Western Pacific region.

Impacts of Light and Food Availability on Early Development of Cassiopea Medusae

Kaden McKenzie Muffett et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of Cassiopea xamachana ephyrae to light and feeding levels, finding that ephyrae exposed to zero light conditions rapidly bleached and experienced significant reductions in size and predation success. Ephyrae starved in sub-compensation level light showed minimal size reductions over 42 days, and those starved in zero light conditions were still largely recoverable at 28 days. The developmental trajectories of various metrics in Cassiopea xamachana ephyrae were significantly influenced by both light and feeding levels in the first 42 days of life.

Raising Awareness of the Severity of Contactless Stings by Cassiopea Jellyfish and Kin

Kaden McKenzie Muffett et al.

Summary: Current doctrine on jellyfish stings primarily focuses on physical contact with jellyfish, but certain jellyfish species like Cassiopea can cause pain and irritation without direct contact. The autonomous stinging structures released by Cassiopea into subtropical waters pose a novel risk for swimmers and waders. Increased awareness of this public safety hazard is needed to prevent incidents in labs, aquariums, and sampling locations.

Characterisation and Bioactivity Analysis of Peridinin-Chlorophyll a-Protein (PCP) Isolated from Symbiodinium tridacnidorum CS-73

Kanoknate M. Supasri et al.

Summary: Peridinin-Chlorophyll a-Proteins (PCP) are major light harvesting proteins in photosynthetic dinoflagellates, with potential bioactive properties for pharmaceutical applications. This study extracted and purified PCP from Symbiodinium tridacnidorum (CS-73), revealing antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammation activities. Further investigations are needed for its pharmaceutical potential beyond its current use as a fluorescent probe.

Characterizing environmental stress responses of aposymbiotic Astrangia poculata to divergent thermal challenges

Daniel M. Wuitchik et al.

Summary: This study investigated coral host stress responses to broad thermal challenges in the absence of symbiosis using aposymbiotic colonies of the facultatively symbiotic coral Astrangia poculata. Results showed that cold challenge induced more differentially expressed genes (DEGs) compared to heat challenge, but the impact on polyp extension was more significant under heat challenge. The response to cold challenge reflected more severe stressors while the response to heat challenge was consistent with lower intensity stressors.

The importance of molecular characters when morphological variability hinders diagnosability: systematics of the moon jellyfish genus Aurelia (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa)

Summary: This study reveals morphological overlap in Aurelia medusae across distant geographic locations, with a lack of regional geographic dissimilarities. Differences in morphology were also found when comparing lab-cultured Aurelia coerulea medusae with diagnostic features.
