The bifunctional formalism: an alternative treatment of density functionals

Kati Finzel

Summary: The bifunctional formalism provides an alternative method to obtain the functional value by exploiting homogeneous density scaling, suppressing the density dependence of the functional derivative. It allows for a pointwise comparison between approximate potentials and reference potentials and provides control over the final electron densities obtained from variational procedures in orbital-free density functional theory.

Pb[PtBi6I12] - Infinite Chains of Heavy Atom Clusters

Maria A. Herz et al.

Summary: The reaction of Bi with Pb, Pt, and BiI3 at temperatures above 330 degrees C produces the subiodide Pb[PtBi6I12], which crystallizes in a rhombohedral space group. This compound is a semiconductor with a bandgap of 0.69 eV. Additionally, the structure of Pb[PtBi6I12] can be interpreted as a superstructure of the NaCl structure type, with certain cation positions remaining unoccupied.
