Transrectal endoscopic drainage with vacuum-assisted therapy in patients with anastomotic leaks following rectal cancer resection

Mateusz Jagielski et al.

Summary: The study found that endoscopic rectal drainage using vacuum-assisted therapy is an effective and safe minimally invasive treatment for patients with intestinal anastomotic leaks following resection procedures within the middle and distal rectum.

Evidence of negative pressure therapy for anastomotic leak: a systematic review

Gary Sharp et al.

Summary: The studies included in this review suggest that 60-100% of anastomotic leaks can heal with endoluminal negative pressure therapy. However, caution is needed in interpreting the results due to the variable definition of success. Stoma closure rates may provide a more objective assessment, but are only reported in 60% of studies. Further research is needed to evaluate the benefits of negative pressure therapy in anastomotic leaks.

Endoscopic vacuum therapy for in- and outpatient treatment of colorectal defects

Florian Kuehn et al.

Summary: Evidence supports the efficacy and safety of endoscopic vacuum therapy (EVT) for colorectal defects, with promising outcomes for both inpatient and outpatient treatment. Risk factors for EVT failure include previous multi-visceral resection and recent surgical revision, while younger patients are more likely to receive outpatient treatment.
