Failure behavior of resistance spot welded advanced high strength steel: The role of surface condition and initial microstructure

A. Ghatei-Kalashami et al.

Summary: The study found that the surface conditions and initial microstructures obtained through continuous galvanizing process have a significant impact on the mechanical properties and failure behavior of resistance spot welded advanced high-strength steels. Formation of internal oxides during annealing and subsequent coating process reduces heat input during resistance spot welding, leading to smaller nugget size and lower tensile-shear peak load values. Nugget size does not control failure location during lap-shear loading, but affects nugget load-carrying capability, and failure behavior is controlled by microstructural characteristics of different weld regions.

A strong and ductile medium Mn steel manufactured via ultrafast heating process

Pengyu Wen et al.

Summary: Ultrafast heating (UFH) followed by immediate cooling was employed to anneal cold rolled 7wt% Mn steel, resulting in a significant increase in yield strength and work hardening capacity. The high density dislocations preserved after UFH, microstructural refinement, and precipitation strengthening are attributed to the substantial strengthening effect observed. Furthermore, the sustainable work hardening is believed to be influenced by the successive TRIP effect during deformation.

Austenite transformation and deformation behavior of a cold-rolled medium-Mn steel under different annealing temperatures

Zigan Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the austenite transformation in a cold-rolled medium-Mn steel through inter-critical annealing (IA) and partition annealing (PA) at different temperatures. The mechanical stability of the reverted austenite plays a key role in the deformation behavior and mechanical properties of the steel, with IA leading to improved strain hardening capacity and total elongation, while PA contributes to increased yield strength. Further optimization of annealing parameters can enhance the mechanical properties of the medium-Mn steel.

Enhanced Cross-Tension Property of the Resistance Spot Welded Medium-Mn Steel by In Situ Microstructure Tailoring

Bingge Zhao et al.

Summary: Medium Mn steels, such as 7Mn steel, exhibit superior mechanical properties but face challenges in cross-tension strength, hindering their application in the automotive industry. This study focuses on optimizing welding parameters during resistance spot welding to improve cross-tension strength by promoting microstructure transition from martensite to tempered martensite. Post-weld treatment, including in situ tempering, decreases segregation of Mn and facilitates the formation of tempered martensite, leading to an increase in cross-tension strength.

Influence of the Cooling Time on the Microstructural Evolution and Mechanical Performance of a Double Pulse Resistance Spot Welded Medium-Mn Steel

Manfred Stadler et al.

Summary: The cooling time greatly influences the mechanical performance and microstructural features of medium-Mn steel in double pulse resistance spot welding. Short cooling times lead to in-process heat treatment, while excessively long cooling times result in deteriorated mechanical properties due to insufficient re-heating of the fusion zone.
