The genomic content and context of auxiliary metabolic genes in roseophages

Xingyu Huang et al.

Summary: Marine bacteriophages, specifically the roseophages, possess a variety of auxiliary metabolic genes acquired through horizontal gene transfer, which play a significant role in their evolution and infection behavior. These genes show different types and frequencies, with high-frequency AMGs being conserved and low-frequency AMGs showing high functional diversity.

VirSorter2: a multi-classifier, expert-guided approach to detect diverse DNA and RNA viruses

Jiarong Guo et al.

Summary: VirSorter2 is a virus identification tool that leverages genome-informed database advances and multiple classifiers to improve accuracy and range of virus sequence detection. It uniquely performs consistently with high accuracy across viral diversity and minimizes errors associated with atypical cellular sequences.

Comparison of ultrafiltration and iron chloride flocculation in the preparation of aquatic viromes from contrasting sample types

Kathryn Langenfeld et al.

Summary: Viral metagenomes are valuable tools for studying viral diversity and their roles in host disease, ecology, and evolution. Through virus spike-and-recovery experiments, it was found that ultrafiltration outperformed iron chloride flocculation in concentrating viral genomes, resulting in higher quality DNA for sequencing.

Ecogenomics of Groundwater Phages Suggests Niche Differentiation Linked to Specific Environmental Tolerance

Ankita Kothari et al.

Summary: This study is the first to identify the distribution of bacteriophages in a groundwater ecosystem, shedding light on their prevalence and distribution across metal-contaminated and background sites. By selectively sequencing extrachromosomal elements of a microbiome and analyzing for viral signatures, a more focused approach for phage identification was established. Using whole-genome sequences of hundreds of bacterial isolates from the same site allowed for high-confidence host assignments, some at the strain level. Certain phage genes suggest they provide an environment-specific selective advantage to their bacterial hosts.

Spatial-temporal targeted and non-targeted surveys to assess microbiological composition of drinking water in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria

Maria Sevillano et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the microbial composition of drinking water in nine systems in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and found that while bacterial concentrations decreased, there was no significant and sustained deterioration in biological quality of the water. This suggests that disruptions caused by the hurricane did not have a major impact on the drinking water quality.
