Discovery of Welcome Biopolymers in Surface Water: Improvements in Drinking Water Production

Zhaoyang Su et al.

Summary: The study sheds light on the presence and significance of biopolymers in surface waters for potable water supply. It shows that biopolymers play a crucial role in coagulation, metal ion adsorption, and membrane separation, significantly enhancing the antifouling capability of membrane nanofiltration. This research reveals the versatile benefits and fate of natural biopolymers in surface water purification processes.

Characterisation of groundwater dissolved organic matter using LC-OCD: Implications for water treatment

Helen Rutlidge et al.

Summary: The polarity and molecular weight of dissolved organic matter (DOM) play a significant role in determining the treatability of water for domestic supply. The research findings suggest that the composition of DOM in surface water and groundwater varies depending on DOM sources and processing. High molecular weight hydrophilic DOM such as biopolymers and humic substances are mainly found in surface waters, while low molecular weight neutrals and hydrophobic organic carbon are more prevalent in regional groundwaters. Our results indicate that the presence of sedimentary organic matter influences the character of surface and groundwater DOM, with higher aromatics and molecular weight in groundwater and reduced LMWNs.

Characterisation and performance of three Kenaf coagulation products under different operating conditions

Benjamin U. Okoro et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of three different plant-based coagulation products used in water treatment in developing countries, focusing on their ability to remove natural organic matter and turbidity. The results showed that these coagulants performed well in water purification, but attention to the optimal dosage is necessary to avoid potential increases in disinfection by-products.

Application of ultra-low concentrations of moderately-hydrophobic chitosan for ultrafiltration membrane fouling mitigation

Min Hu et al.

Summary: The study introduced a strategy for fouling mitigation in ultrafiltration (UF) water treatment by applying an ultra-low concentration of moderately-hydrophobic chitosan (MHC) and using a mildly elevated backwash temperature. The MHC-based UF system showed superior performance under optimal conditions, reducing reversible fouling by approximately 55% and irreversible fouling by about 80%, while also improving effluent quality. The additional cost of MHC dosing and backwash water heating was estimated to be low, making the MHC-based process a potential feasible and cost-effective approach for UF fouling control.

Fluorescence excitation/emission matrices as a tool to monitor the removal of organic micropollutants from wastewater effluents by adsorption onto activated carbon

Ronan Guillossou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of fluorescence spectroscopy in monitoring the removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) by activated carbon (AC) adsorption in industrial scale wastewater treatment. Different operational conditions and physico-chemical properties of OMPs affected the removal efficiency. Positive correlations were found between fluorescence indexes and OMP removal, with higher correlation coefficients compared to UV254, indicating the promising application of fluorescence spectroscopy.

Quantification of DOM effects on tetracyclines transport during struvite recovery from swine wastewater

Xuewei Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the migration of tetracyclines (TCs) during struvite recovery from swine wastewater, revealing that TCs transport is contributed by various processes including the adsorption of pure struvite crystals, struvite adsorbing DOM-TCs complex, and DOM aggregation. Additionally, under alkaline conditions, larger molecular weight DOMs hydrolyze to smaller molecular weight DOMs, promoting the redistribution of TCs among different DOM types.

Xuejia Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of organic compounds on the coagulation performance by affecting metal hydrolysis and nanoparticle properties during the coagulation process. The presence of low molecular weight organics was found to have varying effects on the coagulation performance of alum, with different chemical bonds playing a role in influencing the interactions.
