Diversity and seasonal variation of marine phytoplankton in Jiaozhou Bay, China revealed by morphological observation and metabarcoding

Tiantian Chen et al.

Summary: Phytoplankton play a crucial role in marine environments but their diversity and distribution patterns are still poorly understood, largely due to their small size and inconspicuous morphology. A study in Jiaozhou Bay, China, using both morphological observations and high-throughput sequencing, revealed significant seasonal variations in phytoplankton composition. Metabarcoding showed a much higher diversity of phytoplankton compared to traditional morphology methods, particularly highlighting the importance of parasitic dinoflagellates. Temperature, chlorophyll a, and nutrient levels were identified as the main factors influencing phytoplankton distribution.

Diversity and ecology of protists revealed by metabarcoding

Fabien Burki et al.

Summary: Protists are the predominant eukaryotes in the biosphere, playing key functional roles, and metabarcoding has provided unprecedented opportunities to study their taxonomic and functional diversity. With the maturation of high-throughput long-read sequencing, a robust eco-evolutionary framework of protist diversity is within reach.

Annual phytoplankton dynamics in coastal waters from Fildes Bay, Western Antarctic Peninsula

Nicole Trefault et al.

Summary: The analysis of phytoplankton communities in coastal waters of the West Antarctic Peninsula using metabarcoding revealed different community structures based on the approach used, with different dominant groups in different seasons and size fractions. The discovery of a potentially new clade specific to the Antarctic Micromonas highlights the importance of year-round monitoring and complementary strategies for a comprehensive understanding of phytoplankton dynamics in Antarctic coastal waters.

Resolving cryptic species complexes in marine protists: phylogenetic haplotype networks meet global DNA metabarcoding datasets

Daniele De Luca et al.

Summary: Marine protists have traditionally been considered low in diversity and widespread, but recent studies have shown the presence of cryptic species complexes. Overcoming sampling and methodological limitations, global metabarcoding data analysis reveals geographic and ecological differentiation driving speciation among marine protists.

Biodiversity and Spatial-Temporal Dynamics of Margalefidinium Species in Jiaozhou Bay, China

Shuya Liu et al.

Summary: This study conducted the first metabarcoding study on the temporal and spatial dynamics of harmful Margalefidinium species in Jiaozhou Bay, revealing a high genetic diversity of M. polykrikoides and M. fulvescens. Both species showed a strong temporal preference with a peak in abundance in early autumn, potentially driven by temperature. The study sheds light on the mechanisms underlying the biased occurrences of Margalefidinium blooms worldwide.

Protist diversity: Novel groups enrich the algal tree of life

Marek Elias

Summary: In recent years, the diversity of eukaryotic microbes has been greatly expanded by recognizing or discovering new major branches of the algal tree of life. A new study defines the phylogenetic home for an elusive marine planktonic lineage previously known only by plastidial rRNA genes, placing it in a new class of the phylum Haptophyta.

Changes in protist communities in drainages across the Pearl River Delta under anthropogenic influence

Keshu Zou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the protistan community in drainage systems of the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration using environmental DNA sequencing, revealing that community assembly was primarily driven by stochastic processes, while environmental factors and species interactions also played significant roles. Environmental variables and species interactions significantly influenced the composition and assembly of the protistan community in urban aquatic ecosystems experiencing serious anthropogenic disturbance.
