Characterizing the degradation of refractory organics from incineration leachate membrane concentrate by VUV/O3

Jinyu Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, a combined VUV and O3 process was used to treat incineration leachate membrane concentrate, achieving significant removal of COD by degrading refractory organics into simpler structures. Various analytical methods were employed to investigate the degradation mechanism and types of organics, indicating the effectiveness of the combined action of hydroxyl radicals and O3 in degrading macromolecular organics.

Material flow, economic and environmental assessment of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash recycling potential in Europe

Martina Bruno et al.

Summary: This study examined the management of bottom ash produced from municipal solid waste incineration in Europe in 2018, revealing that a significant amount of bottom ash was left untreated and unrecovered, resulting in waste. An environmental and economic assessment showed that complete valorisation of bottom ash can lead to energy savings, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and economic profitability through iron and copper recycling and avoidance of landfill fees. Profitability was achieved in two-thirds of the countries considered, with an average net present value of 83 million euros, return on investment of 20%, and payback time of 11 years, for bottom ash mass flow exceeding 0.02 Mt.

A successful start-up of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) coupled mainstream partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) system: A pilot-scale study on in-situ NOB elimination, AnAOB growth kinetics, and mainstream treatment performance

Jiang Wu et al.

Summary: The study proposes an innovative treatment process that combines AnMBR with a PN/A system for carbon-neutral municipal wastewater treatment. Through a 255-day start-up process, it was demonstrated that the AnMBR-PN/A process effectively eliminates NOB while retaining AOB community in suspended sludge. The mainstream treatment results showed that the TN removal performance meets discharge limits and the AnMBR-PN/A process has potential for carbon-neutral wastewater treatment plants.

Inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in automatic recycling PN/ANAMMOX under mainstream conditions

Xiaodan Gu et al.

Summary: Regulating dissolved oxygen concentration and sludge retention time can achieve stable nitrite accumulation in an automatic recycling PN/ANAMMOX reactor. Effluent recycling can limit the nitrite-nitrogen required for NOB growth, serving as a feasible strategy for NOB inhibition during the PN/ANAMMOX process.

Two-stage anoxic-oxic (A/O) system for the treatment of coking wastewater: Full-scale performance and microbial community analysis

Huaqiang Chu et al.

Summary: A full-scale coking wastewater treatment plant with a two-stage anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic (A1/O1/A2/O2) process was systematically investigated, showing excellent removal capacity for COD, ammonia, nitrate, and total nitrogen. The microbial community analysis revealed significant changes in bacterial communities during the AOAO process, with shifts in functional microorganisms responsible for organics and nitrogen removal. Metagenomic sequencing also indicated variations in amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism between the primary and secondary AO processes.
