Naturally illuminated photobioreactors for resource recovery from piggery and chicken-processing wastewaters utilising purple phototrophic bacteria

Tim Hulsen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of utilizing anaerobic purple phototrophic bacteria to produce single cell protein from piggery and chicken processing wastewater. The harvested biomass has high protein contents and can be used as a high-quality feed. The biofilm reactors showed efficient removal of COD, N, and P, with high productivities.

Purple phototrophic bacteria granules under high and low upflow velocities

Samuel Stegman et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the formation of purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) granular biomass in synthetic wastewater treatment. The granules showed high settling rates and anaerobic characteristics, with a diverse microbial community and potential for resource recovery.

Purple phototrophic bacteria are outcompeted by aerobic heterotrophs in the presence of oxygen

Gabriel Capson-Tojo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different dissolved oxygen concentrations on the performance of enriched purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) cultures in treating wastewater. The results showed that the presence of oxygen suppressed photoheterotrophic growth of PPB and led to dominant chemoheterotrophy under aerobic conditions. This suggests that PPB cannot outcompete other microbes under aerobic or microaerobic conditions, despite their aerobic capabilities.

Operational Strategies to Selectively Produce Purple Bacteria for Microbial Protein in Raceway Reactors

Abbas Alloul et al.

Summary: The study developed operational strategies to boost PNSB abundance in the biomass of a raceway reactor fed with volatile fatty acids. Matching the COD loading rate to the removal rate during the light period prevented substrate availability during the dark period and increased PNSB abundance. The best performance was achieved at the highest surface-to-volume ratio, showing high productivities and PNSB abundance.
