Cyanobacteria species dominance and diversity in three Australian drinking water reservoirs

Benny Zuse Rousso et al.

Summary: This study identifies correlations between environmental variables and cyanobacterial diversity, succession, and dominance in three Australian water supply reservoirs. The findings show that subtropical lakes have higher cyanobacterial richness compared to temperate lakes. The study also highlights the importance of total nitrogen and total phosphorus in determining the dominance of different cyanobacterial species. The results provide valuable insights for decision making and underscore the potential of new monitoring technologies for species-level assessments.

Machine learning for anomaly detection in cyanobacterial fluorescence signals

Husein Almuhtaram et al.

Summary: Utilities drawing from waters susceptible to harmful algal blooms are implementing monitoring tools to detect the onset of blooms. This study proposes a novel approach using machine learning to identify anomalies in phycocyanin fluorescence data for HAB response, without requiring cell count or biovolume data. One-Class SVM and elliptic envelope models show promise for detecting potential HABs using fluorescence data only.

Light-induced fluorescence quenching leads to errors in sensor measurements of phytoplankton chlorophyll and phycocyaninS

Benny Zuse Rousso et al.

Summary: Optical sensors for fluorescence of chlorophyll a and phycocyanin are commonly used proxies for algae and cyanobacteria biomass monitoring. However, fluctuations in light intensity can significantly suppress the fluorescence measurements, especially during bright conditions. Diel variations in light intensity need to be considered as a significant source of bias for fluorescence probes used for algal monitoring.

Toxic cyanobacteria in water supply systems: data analysis to map global challenges and demonstrate the benefits of multi-barrier treatment approaches

Arash Zamyadi et al.

Summary: This paper evaluated the presence of cyanobacteria in surface water sources and their removal efficiency in full-scale WTPs globally, finding that multiple cyanotoxins and taste and odor compounds frequently co-occurred. Conventional treatment showed varying removal efficiency, but advanced treatment methods were effective in removing cells and metabolites of concern, providing guidance for water treatment plant operators to assess potential risks.
