Chemical or Genetic Alteration of Proton Motive Force Results in Loss of Virulence of Burkholderia glumae, the Cause of Rice Bacterial Panicle Blight

Asif Iqbal et al.

Summary: This study reveals the impact of a DedA family protein named DbcA on the virulence of Burkholderia glumae, the pathogen causing bacterial panicle blight (BPB) in rice. The disruption of proton motive force by DbcA deletion leads to reduced secretion of the essential virulence factor toxoflavin, ultimately affecting the pathogenicity of the bacterium. Additionally, the use of sodium bicarbonate as a non-toxic intervention to disrupt PMF and control BPB shows promise as an effective antivirulence strategy without environmental burden.

Efficient cooling tower operation at alkaline pH for the control of Legionella pneumophila and other pathogenic genera

I. S. M. Pinel et al.

Summary: Experimental findings suggest that high-pH conditioning (≥9.6) can effectively control the growth of Legionella pneumophila and other pathogens in industrial cooling towers without the use of disinfectants, making the operation more environmentally friendly.

Legionella and other opportunistic pathogens in full-scale chloraminated municipal drinking water distribution systems

Chiqian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Legionella is a dominant water-based opportunistic pathogen in four full-scale drinking water distribution systems in the United States, showing significant correlations with other pathogens and bacteria. The concentrations of OPs show strong seasonal variations and are influenced by hydraulic residence time, indicating the importance of maintaining disinfectant residuals for OP control in DWDSs.

Bacterial Long-Range Warfare: Aerial Killing of Legionella pneumophila by Pseudomonas fluorescens

Marie-Helene Corre et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that volatile substances emitted by Pseudomonas fluorescens strain MFE01 can inhibit the growth of Legionella pneumophila at a distance. This discovery highlights the potential of bacterial volatiles as potent anti-Legionella agents and suggests novel strategies for combating Legionella infections.
