Novel Pathway for Vanadium(V) Bio-Detoxification by Gram-Positive Lactococcus raffinolactis

Baogang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates for the first time the potential of a Gram-positive bacterium, Lactococcus raffinolactis, in effectively reducing V(V) contamination. The reduction process involves both intracellular and extracellular mechanisms, with nitrite reductase playing a key role. The study also highlights the importance of oxidative stress tolerance and extracellular polymeric substances in V(V) bio-reduction.

Degradation of metoprolol from wastewater in a bio-electro-Fenton system

Xiaoyong Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) technology for the removal of the typical micropollutant metoprolol in water environments. The results showed that applied voltage and working pH significantly affected removal efficiency, while Fe2+ dosage had little effect.

New insights into the vertical distribution and microbial degradation of microplastics in urban river sediments

Lihua Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics and the bacterial community assemblages in urban river sediments. The results showed that microplastics and associated microbial communities have vertical profiles in river sediments. The indicative plastic-degrading bacteria significantly increased in abundance and centrality from shallow to deep layers, suggesting a primary role in the degradation of microplastics in deep sediments.

Coordinated response of Au-NPs/rGO modified electroactive biofilms under phenolic compounds shock: Comprehensive analysis from architecture, composition, and activity

Biao Li et al.

Summary: Nanocatalyst-decorated EABs showed significantly enhanced power density under different environmental stresses, leading to differential alterations in their structure, composition, and viability. EABs with higher maturity exhibited better antishock ability and actively responded to strike a balance between self-protection and extracellular electron transfer under environmental pressure. These findings contribute to a broader understanding of microbe-electrode interactions and enhance their performance in sustainable remediation and new-energy development.

The entering of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics into biological wastewater treatment system affects aerobic sludge digestion differently from their direct entering into sludge treatment system

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the inhibition effect of PET microplastics on waste activated sludge (WAS) aerobic digestion, showing a decrease in hydrolysis but an improvement in solubilization when PET microplastics enter the biological wastewater treatment system. However, direct addition of PET microplastics to the sludge aerobic digester resulted in serious inhibition of hydrolysis, significantly suppressing WAS aerobic digestion. Further investigation revealed that PET microplastics reduced the populations of key bacteria involved in aerobic digestion via induced oxidative stress or releasing toxic chemicals.
