Revisiting the role of reactive oxygen species for pollutant abatement during catalytic ozonation: The probe approach versus the scavenger approach

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: By comparing the conventional scavenger approach with the proposed probe approach, this study found that using probes can accurately reveal catalytic ozonation mechanisms and provide an effective way to assess the contribution of various ROS to pollutant abatement.

Tuning Lewis acidity of iron-based metal-organic frameworks for enhanced catalytic ozonation

Deyou Yu et al.

Summary: Ce doping can significantly enhance the catalytic performance of iron-based MOFs, with total Lewis acidity and salicylic acid (SA) degradation rate linearly correlated to Ce substitution ratio. MIL-88A(Fe0.80Ce0.20) showed about 3 times higher degradation rate and 2 times higher TOC removal compared to the parent MIL-88A(Fe).

Sintering- and oxidation-resistant ultrasmall Cu(I)/(II) oxides supported on defect-rich mesoporous alumina microspheres boosting catalytic ozonation

Hua Chen et al.

Summary: Novel copper oxide (CuOx) catalysts supported on defect-rich mesoporous alumina microspheres exhibited high stability, small size, tunable valency, and remarkable catalytic performance in catalyzing the ozonation of phenol wastewaters. The unique structure and defective nature of the catalysts along with the cooperative role of surface hydroxyl groups and Cu+/Cu-2(+) redox couples contribute to their superior catalytic activity. The study proposed a plausible mechanism for the catalytic O-3 decomposition in the presence of the CuOx catalysts.

Evaluation of the concentration and contribution of superoxide radical for micropollutant abatement during ozonation

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: During ozonation, the concentrations ratios of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals and ozone remain constant, indicating the potential non-negligible role of superoxide radicals in the degradation of certain micropollutants with similar or higher reactivity compared to hydroxyl radicals. The proposed chemical kinetic model accurately simulates the abatement efficiencies of ozone-resistant micropollutants by considering the contribution of superoxide radicals, providing a valuable tool for predicting micropollutant removal during ozonation.

Treatment of a mixture of pharmaceuticals, herbicides and perfluorinated compounds by powdered activated carbon and ozone: Synergy, catalysis and insights into non-free •OH contingent mechanisms

Mirna Alameddine et al.

Summary: Powdered activated carbon (PAC) acts as a strong adsorbent and catalyst for ozonation processes in treating micropollutants. The simultaneous addition of ozone (O-3) and PAC enhances the removal and degradation rates of micropollutants, with scavenging actions of hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) and other reactive oxygen species. Detailed studies show that the presence of PAC does not boost the generation of free hydroxyl radicals in the decomposition of ozone at neutral pH, but rather produces adsorbed hydroxyl radicals and other oxidizing species.
