Spatiotemporal profiling of antibiotics and resistance genes in a river catchment: Human population as the main driver of antibiotic and antibiotic resistance gene presence in the environment

Felicity C. T. Elder et al.

Summary: Through studying the abundance and distribution of 16 antibiotics and 4 corresponding antibiotic resistance genes sampled from the influent of five wastewater treatment plants, it was found that there is a strong correlation between the population size served by the WWTPs and the daily loads of antibiotics and ARGs discharged into the environment. While the efficiency of antibiotics and ARGs removal by WWTPs varies, a consistent correlation between the population size served by WWTPs and the daily loads of discharged antibiotics and ARGs was observed.
