Anthropogenic landcover impacts fluvial dissolved organic matter composition in the Upper Mississippi River Basin

Derrick R. Vaughn et al.

Summary: Landcover changes have impacted the natural carbon cycle, with differences in dissolved organic carbon concentrations and molecular compositions in streams draining forest, agriculture, and urban landcovers. Forest and urban streams have higher DOC concentrations, while agricultural and urban streams show higher abundances of N-,S- heteroatomic formulae. The differences likely result from carbon sourcing, microbial processing, soil disturbance, and anthropogenic inputs.

Molecular evidence for the export of terrigenous organic matter to the north Gulf of Mexico by solid-state 13C NMR and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry of humic acids

Sarah A. Ware et al.

Summary: By analyzing sediment samples from the Mississippi River Birdsfoot Delta to the Mississippi Canyon, it was found that terrigenous organic matter plays a crucial role in the export to the Gulf of Mexico. Condensed aromatics (CA) and carboxyl-containing aliphatic molecules (CCAM) are the main compounds present, showing variations in content at different distances offshore, indicating deposition of terrigenous organic matter in offshore sediments.

Characterization of lower Phong river dissolved organic matters and formations of unknown chlorine dioxide and chlorine disinfection by-products by Orbitrap mass spectrometry

Thirawit Prasert et al.

Summary: The characteristics of dissolved organic matter in the lower Phong River in Thailand were found to be influenced by domestic wastewater discharges, anthropogenic activities, and surface runoff, with differences in molecular composition observed between dry season and rainy season. Disinfection by chlorine or chlorine dioxide resulted in the formation of both chlorinated and non-chlorinated disinfection byproducts, with differences in the types and characteristics of DBPs produced by each disinfectant.

Linking the unique molecular complexity of dissolved organic matter to flood period in the Yangtze River mainstream

Yu Pang et al.

Summary: Through spectroscopy and mass spectrometry analysis, the study found that during high discharge, the Yangtze River mainstream contains a higher amount of terrestrially derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) with higher molecular complexity and stability. Optical properties confirmed higher aromaticity and relatively higher abundance of polyphenols and highly unsaturated compounds in DOM during high discharge. These unique molecular formulae detected during high discharge are mainly lignin degradation products.

Effects of stream ecosystem metabolisms on CO2 emissions in two headwater catchments, Southeastern China

Chen Gong et al.

Summary: Headwater streams emit large quantities of CO2 due to their proximity to terrestrial sources, with ecosystem respiration having a significant impact on CO2 emissions. Nocturnal CO2 emissions are more pronounced, with respiration rates correlated with DOC concentration and inversely related to water discharge. The study highlights the importance of headwater streams in river carbon cycling.

Summary: The study demonstrates the crucial role of algae-associated microorganisms, mainly heterotrophic bacteria, in transforming recalcitrant dissolved organic matter. The presence of these bacteria is essential for the conversion of algal organic matter into CRAM-like DOM, enriching recalcitrant DOM during the growth and decay of algal cells. The properties and diversity of DOM increase with the growth and decay of algal cells, indicating the transformation from active to recalcitrant DOM.

Global prevalence of non-perennial rivers and streams

Mathis Loic Messager et al.

Summary: Flowing waters play a crucial role in supporting global biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, and human societies. However, the prevalence and significance of non-perennial rivers and streams are often overlooked, contributing to the degradation of water sources and livelihoods. By analyzing global data, it was found that a significant portion of the world's rivers experience at least one day of flow cessation each year, challenging traditional river concepts and highlighting the importance of considering intermittence in river management.
