Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) adsorption in drinking water by granular activated carbon: Influence of activated carbon and PFAS characteristics

Beatrice Cantoni et al.

Summary: The persistence of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment leads to their presence in drinking water, posing a high concern for human health. Adsorption onto activated carbon (AC) has been identified as an effective technique for PFAS removal. The surface charge of AC was found to be the most important factor affecting adsorption performance, with positively-charged AC showing stronger adsorption capacities. Different types of AC demonstrated varied adsorption effects on different properties of PFAS in full-scale monitoring.

PFAS and DOM removal using an organic scavenger and PFAS-specific resin: Trade-off between regeneration and faster kinetics

Fuhar Dixit et al.

Summary: Treatment technologies like ion exchange show potential in removing toxic PFAS from natural waters, but the use of PFAS-specific resins can lead to increased resin demand and operational costs. Comparative studies found that PFAS-specific resin had faster uptake kinetics for PFAS and removed some DOM, while regenerative organic scavenger resin required longer contact times for PFAS removal. Despite differences in resin breakthrough, both IX resins showed similar levels of PFAS and DOM removal before exhaustion.

PFAS treatment with granular activated carbon and ion exchange resin: Comparing chain length, empty bed contact time, and cost

Conner C. Murray et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are highly persistent chemicals with significant global environmental challenges. A study comparing the removal performance of granular activated carbon (GAC) and ion exchange resin (IX) for PFASs found that the length of PFAS chains and functional groups determine the mass transfer zone (MTZ) height and optimal empty bed contact times (EBCTs). Cost sensitivity analysis showed that IX was the most cost-effective adsorbent for removing both long and short chain PFASs compared to GAC.
