New value from food and industrial wastes - Bioaccumulation of omega-3 fatty acids from an oleaginous microbial biomass paired with a brewery by-product using black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae

Chiara Ceccotti et al.

Summary: Research on bioconversion based on insects is intensifying, aiming to reduce and reuse food and industrial waste. This study successfully paired brewers' spent grains with the oleaginous biomass of Schizochytrium limacinum, leading to increased growth and omega-3 fatty acid content in Hermetia illucens larvae. However, further research is needed to meet the demand for high omega-3 fatty acid production.

Monitoring feedstock losses over five months storage of olive tree pruning hog fuel in piles. Comparison of covered vs. uncovered storage

Michael Alexandros Kougioumtzis et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to monitor feedstock losses during storage of olive tree pruning hog fuel. Two methods of storage were compared, one uncovered and one fleece-covered. The covered storage showed improved performance with lower dry matter losses, stable moisture content, and higher recoverable energy gain compared to uncovered storage.

Dataset for a full-year time series characterization of separately collected organic fraction of municipal solid waste from rural and urban regions in Germany

Gregor Sailer et al.

Summary: This article presents year-round data on the chemical composition of organic fractions of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) from rural and urban origins in Tubingen, southern Germany. The data can be used by researchers, waste management companies, and municipalities for comparing and expanding their own OFMSW data, calculating energy yields of OFMSW in anaerobic digestion, and evaluating material utilization of OFMSW-based digestates and compost products.

Novel sorbent shows promising financial results on P recovery from sludge water

Jana Stavkova et al.

Summary: The study reveals that biochar sorption of phosphorus is popular in developing countries, while struvite precipitation is the most cost-effective method in other developed countries. Using broken cellulose casings as sorbents activated by calcium chloride can efficiently capture and store phosphorus in the form of calcium phosphates.

Characterization of the separately collected organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) from rural and urban districts for a one-year period in Germany

Gregor Sailer et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the physicochemical characteristics of rural and urban organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) samples from southwestern Germany, focusing on basic characteristics and element contents. Differences were observed in dry matter and organic dry matter contents between rural and urban OFMSW, with element concentrations useful for improved classification of OFMSW as a biorefinery resource.
