Explosive crystallization of sputter-deposited amorphous germanium films by irradiation with an electron beam of SEM-level energies

R. Nakamura et al.

Summary: Crystallization of substrate-free amorphous germanium films was induced by electron irradiation at energies below 20 keV, resulting in explosive crystallization at 2-20 keV. This process requires a threshold electron flux five to six orders of magnitude lower than previously reported at 100 keV, making it advantageous for producing polycrystalline Ge films.

Thickness dependent growth of Ge nanoparticles in amorphous Ge/ SiO2 multilayers

B. Pivac et al.

Summary: Amorphous Ge/SiO2 multilayers were deposited using e-gun assisted physical vapor deposition technique with continuous Ge layers of varying thickness. Annealing of these layers at low temperatures produced spherical crystalline nanoparticles from thin Ge layers and a bimodal distribution of smaller spheres and larger oblate spheroids from thicker Ge layers. Multiple characterization techniques confirmed the findings.
