Analysis of additional stress for a curved shield tunnel

Shaohua Li et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the analytical solutions of additional stresses for a curved shield tunnel, considering construction loadings and soil loss. By deriving equations and conducting a case study, it was found that the stress distribution for curved tunnels differs from that of straight-line tunnels. The research results have implications for tunnel engineering design.

Stability analysis of the middle soil pillar for asymmetric parallel tunnels by using model testing and numerical simulations

Hebin Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical characteristics of the middle soil pillar (MSP) in asymmetric parallel tunnels through model tests and numerical analysis. A failure degree index is proposed to evaluate the damage extent of the MSP. It is found that in sandy ground, the horizontal stress release and release rate of the MSP increase with external loads.

Soft computing approach for prediction of surface settlement induced by earth pressure balance shield tunneling

W. G. Zhang et al.

Summary: This study established predictive models for assessing surface settlement induced by EPB tunneling using different soft computing techniques and validated them with datasets from three tunnel construction projects in Singapore. The results showed that the XGBoost model had slightly better accuracy in predicting ground settlement and was more computationally efficient.

Prediction of interfaces of geological formations using the multivariate adaptive regression spline method

Xiaohui Qi et al.

Summary: The study used the MARS method to predict the elevations of geological interfaces, showing good accuracy compared to borehole data. Furthermore, the MARS method was able to generate reasonable prediction intervals that properly reflected the data density and geological complexity.
