The presence of chloride ions enhances material loss of 2205 duplex stainless steel during sliding and promotes localized corrosion. Wear in NaCl results in smoother wear tracks with less evidence of ploughing and third body particle action compared to experiments in Na2SO4.
The tribocorrosion behavior of 2205 duplex stainless steel was studied in 0.6 M NaCl and 0.6 M Na2SO4. It was found that the presence of the aggressive chloride (Cl-) ion enhanced material loss of 2205 during sliding at applied anodic potentials within the passive regime for this material. Sliding wear in 0.6 M NaCl increased the amount of material loss by 23-36% and resulted in smoother wear tracks with less evidence of ploughing and third body particle action compared to experiments in 0.6 M Na2SO4. Wear induced localized corrosion was also promoted by the presence of Cl- at 600 and 800 mV(SCE), where attack occurred predominately in the ferrite phase and at the ferrite/austenite boundary.
