The metastable constituent effects on size-dependent deformation behavior of nanolaminated micropillars: Cu/FeCoCrNi vs Cu/CuZr

Yufang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study explores the deformation behaviors and mechanical properties of Cu/HEA and Cu/MG nanolaminated micropillars with different intrinsic layer thicknesses and extrinsic pillar diameters. The results show that the metastable HEA layers in Cu/HEA micropillars dominate the deformation, while transformation occurs in Cu/MG micropillars. The intrinsic size h and extrinsic size D have a strong coupling effect on the strength of both types of micropillars.

Study on wear behavior of FeNiCrCoCu high entropy alloy coating on Cu substrate based on molecular dynamics

Junye Li et al.

Summary: The wear performance and protection ability of FeNiCrCoCu HEA coating on Cu substrate were studied using molecular dynamics, showing that the friction coefficient of abrasive particle decreased with cutting velocity. The research revealed that HEA coatings can effectively improve wear resistance, especially in areas of high stress concentration below abrasive particles.

Nano-tribological behavior of high-entropy alloys CrMnFeCoNi and CrFeCoNi under different conditions: A molecular dynamics study

Yunqing Tang et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have superior properties and high wear resistance, but further understanding of their responses to different wearing conditions is needed for effective utilization. Research on nano-wear and nano/micro-machining under different conditions is limited, affecting the extension of HEAs to nanotechnological areas. This study using molecular dynamics simulations provides insight into the nano-tribological behaviors of HEAs under different wearing conditions, helping to mitigate wear or improve machining efficiency.

Effect of abrasive grain position patterns on the deformation of 6H-silicon carbide subjected to nano-grinding

Zhonghuai Wu et al.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the influence of grain position patterns on the deformation of 6H-SiC. It was found that the plastic deformation of 6H-SiC is characterized by a thin amorphous layer at the surface and dislocations in the subsurface, with details varying depending on grain position patterns and gaps.

Study on the subsurface damage mechanism of optical quartz glass during single grain scratching

Ming Li et al.

Summary: The study established a single grain scratching SPH simulation model to investigate subsurface damage in optical quartz glass. It was found that cracks primarily generate at the elastic-plastic deformation boundary in front of the grain, with crack depth and plastic deformation increasing with scratching depth. Additionally, increasing scratching speed leads to higher dynamic fracture toughness and a decrease in both the depth and number of subsurface cracks.

Nanoindentation into FeCoNiCrCu high-entropy alloy: an atomistic study

Anran Mu et al.

Summary: The mechanical behaviors of FeCoNiCrCu high entropy alloys were studied using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. The effects of Cu precipitation on mechanical properties were discussed, with findings showing that the modulus calculated from simulations were inconsistent with experiments. It was also concluded that Cu precipitation increases the elastic modulus of the matrix, while solution of Cu into the matrix can increase the work strengthening rate.

Nanoscale sliding friction behavior on Cu/Ag bilayers influenced by water film

Yuanyuan Tian et al.

Summary: The behavior of nanoscale sliding friction of nanoparticles on Cu/Ag bilayers is influenced by the presence of a water film, which can improve surface quality and reduce friction coefficient but also exacerbate subsurface damage and interface microstructure changes. Optimal water film thickness can minimize damage and friction while enhancing surface quality during water-assisted sliding. This study provides insights into the sliding friction mechanism and offers guidance on water usage to mitigate damage and improve performance of bilayer materials.

Effect of Al addition on the microstructure, mechanical and wear properties of TiZrNbHf refractory high entropy alloys

Vipul Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: A series of AlxTiZrNbHf refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) were prepared to investigate their mechanical and wear properties. It was found that the addition of Al improved the mechanical and wear resistance properties by causing lattice distortion and second phase strengthening in the alloys. The study highlighted significant alterations in microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance with the inclusion of Al, which is beneficial for designing alloys for wear applications.
