Coproduction of Tet(X7) Conferring High-Level Tigecycline Resistance, Fosfomycin FosA4, and Colistin Mcr-1.1 in Escherichia coli Strains from Chickens in Egypt

Ahmed M. Soliman et al.

Summary: Plasmid-mediated tet(X7) conferring high-level tigecycline resistance was identified in five mcr-1.1-positive Escherichia coli strains isolated from chickens in Egypt, with two fosA4-carrying IncFII plasmids detected. Transposase ISCR3 was found to be syntenic with tet(X7) in all isolates, indicating its role in the mobilization of tet(X7). This study represents the first global report of ST4-IncHI2 plasmids co-carrying tet (X7) and mcr-1.1 from chickens.

Virulence Determinants and Plasmid-Mediated Colistin Resistance mcr Genes in Gram-Negative Bacteria Isolated From Bovine Milk

Yasmine H. Tartor et al.

Summary: A significant rise in bacterial resistance to colistin, a crucial last-resort treatment for severe infections, has been observed globally. The use of colistin in livestock farming is believed to be a key factor in the spread of mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) genes. In Egypt, a study on colistin-resistant Gram-negative bacteria from mastitic cows' milk and raw unpasteurized milk revealed high levels of multidrug resistance and the presence of mcr genes, highlighting the urgent need to ban colistin in food animals to combat extensively drug-resistant (XDR) and multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria.

Prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Salmonella enterica from retail fishes in Egypt: A major threat to public health

Mahmoud F. Gawish et al.

Summary: The study in Egypt revealed the presence of multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica with extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production in retail fish, posing a potential public health threat due to their resistance and transmission possibility to humans. The identified ESBL-producing S. enterica strains exhibited resistance to multiple classes of antimicrobials and carried various ESBL-encoding genes, emphasizing the importance of monitoring antibiotic resistance in foodborne pathogens.
