Small-scale commercial chicken production: A risky business for farmers in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam

Dinh Bao Truong et al.

Summary: Small-scale farming of meat chicken flocks using local native breeds is important for the economy in rural areas of Vietnam and LMICs, but there is limited knowledge on the profitability and sustainability of these systems. Feed is the largest financial cost for these farms, and a significant portion of farms decide to stop raising chickens after one cycle due to higher costs and mortality rates. Supporting farmers with advisory services and training in the early stages can help improve profitability and reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease emergence.

Summary: The study in small-scale chicken farms in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam showed that providing veterinary advice can significantly reduce antimicrobial use, decrease mortality rates, and increase chicken bodyweight without compromising flock health and productivity.

Geographic Drivers of Antimicrobial Use and Resistance in Pigs in Khon Kaen Province, Thailand

Laura Huber et al.

Summary: In Thailand, pig production has increased significantly in recent decades to meet growing demand for pork, but the use of antimicrobials has also led to an increase in antimicrobial resistance. The study found that farms using antibiotics had a higher proportion of antimicrobial-resistant E. coli, and medium-scale farms with intensive animal production practices showed higher resistance rates. Farms located closer to drugstores and with a higher disease proportion had drug-resistant Escherichia coli.
