In situ biomineralization-constructed superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic PVDF-TiO2 membranes for superior antifouling separation of oil-in-water emulsions

Wei Deng et al.

Summary: The in situ biomineralization method was used to fabricate PVDF-TiO2 membranes with superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties, which showed excellent antifouling performance and high rejection of oil during crossflow filtration of oil-in-water emulsions. The superior performance of the membrane was attributed to the durable and super-wetting TiO2 coatings, as well as the relatively smooth surface structure that prevented oil trapping.

Gold-modified paper as microfluidic substrates with reduced biofouling in potentiometric ion sensing

Ruiyu Ding et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of paper-based microfluidic sampling media modified with gold nanoparticles for the potentiometric determination of Na+, K+, and Cl- ions in clinically relevant samples. The modification was found to significantly slow down the transport of bovine serum albumin and improve the accuracy of ion determinations in sweat, saliva, artificial tears, and artificial serum. This approach of modifying paper by AuNPs shows promise in reducing biofouling of sensors used in paper-based analysis of clinically relevant samples.

Polymeric membrane ion-selective electrodes with anti-biofouling properties by surface modification of silver nanoparticles

Longbin Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, a method based on surface modification of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to endow ISE membranes with anti-biofouling properties was described. The Ag NPs modified K+-ISE exhibited significantly improved anti-biofouling properties while retaining its original potentiometric ion response properties. This approach shows potential for enhancing the antifouling abilities of other polymeric membrane-based electrochemical sensors in complex environmental samples.

Enhancing the Oil-Fouling Resistance of Polymeric Membrane Ion-Selective Electrodes by Surface Modification of a Zwitterionic Polymer-Based Oleophobic Self-Cleaning Coating

Longbin Qi et al.

Summary: The study presents a simple method to enhance the oil-fouling resistance of polymeric membrane ISEs by surface modification with a zwitterionic polymer-based underwater oleophobic coating. Experimental results show that the coating can transform the oleophilic membrane surface to an oleophobic one, providing excellent self-cleaning properties without compromising the analytical performance of the sensor. This approach holds promise for improving the oil-fouling resistance of other polymeric membrane-based electrochemical sensors in oil-polluted environments.
