Snake venom proteome of Protobothrops mucrosquamatus in Taiwan: Delaying venom-induced lethality in a rodent model by inhibition of phospholipase A2 activity with varespladib

Chien-Chun Liu et al.

Summary: The venom of Protobothrops mucrosquamatus contains 61 distinct proteins, with snake venom metalloproteinase, C-type lectin, snake venom serine protease, and phospholipase A(2) being the most abundant families. The PLA(2) contributes significantly to venom lethality and its activity can be inhibited by the small-molecule drug varespladib. In vivo studies in a mouse model showed varespladib could reduce the lethal effects of P. mucrosquamatus envenomation.

Anticoagulant Micrurus venoms: Targets and neutralization

Daniel Dashevsky et al.

Summary: The study discovered the anticoagulant properties of venoms from the genus Micrurus, with particular emphasis on M. laticollaris. While the coral snake antivenom Coralmyn was largely ineffective, varespladib completely eliminated the anticoagulant activity of the venoms. Varespladib could be a promising treatment for various venom toxicities, offering logistical advantages over traditional antivenoms.

Protective action of N-acetyl-L-cysteine associated with a polyvalent antivenom on the envenomation induced by Lachesis muta muta (South American bushmaster) in rats

Aline G. Leao-Torres et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that the combination of NAC with antivenom can effectively reduce the acute local and systemic effects induced by Lachesis muta muta venom in rats. NAC alone was able to reduce creatine kinase release, while antivenom helped decrease the increase in various white blood cells.
