New concept of carbon fiber reinforced composite 3D auxetic lattice structures based on stretching-dominated cells

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new concept of 3D auxetic lattice structures with high stiffness and explores a method for rapidly fabricating them. Theoretical models are developed to predict the homogenized elastic properties of the structures, and the directional dependence of these properties is investigated in detail. Experimental and numerical analysis confirm that the structures are suitable for uniaxial loading and exhibit excellent load bearing capacity and negative Poisson's ratio effects. Efforts to promote the wider use of these structures in various applications are emphasized.

Investigation on the shear behaviors of carbon fiber composite sandwich panels with the X-core

Jie Mei et al.

Summary: The in-plane shear response of an all-composite X-core sandwich panel was investigated through experimental, numerical, and analytical methods in this study. The findings revealed the dominant failure mode of delamination on the joint and web, and the numerical models accurately simulated the initiation and extension of delamination, showing good agreement with experimental results. The theoretical model based on Reddy zig-zag laminated beams theory and spring model for the joint successfully forecasted the shear mechanical properties, with analytical results showing significant effects of member shear deformation and joint stiffness on the shear modulus and reasonable agreement with experiments.

Elastic and failure characteristics of additive manufactured thin wall lattice structures with defects

Yan Wu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of material defects on the elastic and fracture characteristics of lattice structures, finding that material property variabilities reduce initial fracture strength, increase retaining strength, and lead to unexpected fracture patterns. Auxetic and diamond structures exhibit different sensitivities to material property variabilities, which has various implications for their potential applications.

A multiscale model for the prediction of ballistic performance of fiber-reinforced composites

Wenqing Zhu et al.

Summary: This study delves into the effects of microscale constituent dimensions and properties on the impact performance of macroscopic fiber-reinforced laminates. A numerical algorithm incorporating the dynamic shear-lag model is developed, revealing a linear relationship between dimensionless viscosity and impulse duration for optimal energy dissipation. A new multiscale model is established to consider the contribution of the matrix to energy absorption, successfully capturing the impact of matrix properties on the ballistic limits of aramid fiber and carbon fiber composites.
