A fracture model for assessing tensile mode crack growth resistance of rocks

Mingdong Wei et al.

Summary: Evaluating fracture resistance of rocks is crucial for predicting and preventing catastrophic failure of cracked structures in rock engineering. This study developed a brittle fracture model to predict tensile mode (mode I) failure loads of cracked rocks. The model estimates the reference crack corresponding to the fracture process zone (FPZ) based on the maximum normal strain (MNSN) ahead of the crack tip, and uses the effective crack to calculate the fracture toughness. Experimental results validated the model's accuracy in predicting fracture toughness and analyzing the size effect of apparent fracture toughness.

Deformation and fracture behavior of granite by the short core in compression method with 3D digital image correlation

Diyuan Li et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior, damage and fracture characteristics of granite specimens were tested and observed using 3D-DIC and SCC method. The study found that damage in the region of interest increases with axial stress, relative displacements indicate tensile-shear mixed mode fracture in SCC specimens, and new fracture initiates from the middle part of ESFB. Fracture energy of granite is estimated as 1760.4 J/m² based on energy conservation law.

Analytical and experimental investigation on the effect of loading rate on the fracture toughness and fracture envelope in brittle rocks

Mahmoud Alneasan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of strain rate on fracture toughness of brittle rocks under different loading modes and found that as strain rate increased, fracture toughness also increased. The S-criterion was found to be better at characterizing fracture envelope under low strain rates, while further development is needed for high strain rates.

Investigation of the influence of intermediate principal stress on the dynamic responses of rocks subjected to true triaxial stress state

Wei You et al.

Summary: This study introduces a numerical servo triaxial Hopkinson bar (NSTHB) to investigate the dynamic responses of rocks under a true triaxial stress state. The results indicate that the increase in intermediate principal stress leads to an increase in dynamic strength and elastic modulus of rocks, while the dynamic elastic modulus remains independent of the dynamic strain rate. Additionally, the study shows that the intermediate principal stress significantly affects the dynamic failure modes of rocks.

Study on the microscopic damage evolution and dynamic fracture properties of sandstone under freeze-thaw cycles

Caoyuan Niu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that cyclic freeze-thaw has a significant impact on the dynamic fracture behavior of rocks, leading to increased porosity and crack velocity, as well as decreased crack initiation time and dynamic fracture toughness. Sandstone is susceptible to freeze-thaw weathering, with the roughness of the fracture surface indicating intergranular fracture playing a dominant role in sandstone failure.

Evaluating the dynamic fracture toughness of graphite via accurate determination of the dynamic crack propagation length

Yanan Yi et al.

Summary: A virtual extensometer method based on digital image correlation was established to accurately measure the dynamic crack propagation length of nuclear graphite and obtain its fracture toughness. Experimental results showed that the dynamic fracture toughness of graphite increased with the impact velocities, sometimes substantially higher than the static fracture toughness.

Underlying Mechanisms of Crack Initiation for Granitic Rocks Containing a Single Pre-existing Flaw: Insights From Digital Image Correlation (DIC) Analysis

Liwang Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel method to quantitatively determine the crack initiation mechanism in granitic samples using digital image correlation (DIC) analysis. The research found that with the increase of inclination angles, the crack initiation mechanisms changed, with wing cracks transitioning from mixed mode I/II cracks to mode I cracks, and anti-wing cracks remaining dominated by mode II cracks.

An asymmetric semi-circular bend method for investigating fracture behavior of brittle rocks under dynamic mixed mode I/II loading

Youzhen Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the fracture behavior of brittle rocks under dynamic mixed mode I/II loading is important for rock engineering structures. This study introduces a novel experimental method to investigate this fracture behavior, showing significant loading rate dependence of dynamic fracture toughness. The results demonstrate the feasibility and reliability of the method, revealing deviations in fracture path under mixed mode loading compared to pure mode loading.

New insights into the fracture mechanism of flattened Brazilian disc specimen using digital image correlation

Zelin Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the progressive failure process of flattened Brazilian disc (FBD) specimen using digital image correlation technique and proposes a modified calculation method to determine mode-I fracture toughness KIC. Additionally, the cracking nature of secondary cracks and the second rise of loading force induced by compressionshear failure near the flattened ends of the FBD specimen are identified. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the progressive fracture mechanism of FBD specimens and enhance the accuracy of KIC calibration by FBD testing method.

Effect of thermal treatment on the fracture toughness and subcritical crack growth of granite in double-torsion test

Diyuan Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the fracture behavior of hard rocks at different temperatures is crucial for the design and stability of nuclear waste disposal projects. This study found that thermal treatment at temperatures above 400 degrees Celsius led to a decrease in strength and toughness of granite due to the destruction of quartz crystal structure and generation of wider intergranular fractures. The subcritical crack growth index (n) can be used to evaluate the susceptibility of subcritical crack propagation in rock relaxation tests, aiding in the assessment of long-term stability in nuclear waste disposal projects.
