A simple and efficient cyanide-free protocol for the total synthesis of rosuvastatin calcium was developed using inexpensive and commercially available D-arabinose as the starting material. The key steps involved Wittig reaction followed by oxa-Michael addition. This synthetic protocol can be applied for industrial production of rosuvastatin calcium.
