Multi-elemental analysis of particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 by ICP OES

Eduardo Jose dos Santos Souza et al.

Summary: The study proposed a precise and accurate protocol for extracting and quantifying metals in PM samples with excellent compensations. The method showed good accuracy and repeatability in extraction and digestion processes. Cloud point extraction (CPE) was successfully applied with optimized parameters for the determination of Pd and Pt in digested PM samples.

Distribution Coefficients of the REEs, Sr, Y, Ba, Th, and U between α-HIBA and AG50W-X8 Resin

Haoyu Li et al.

Summary: This study presents experimental results on the distribution coefficients of REEs between alpha-HIBA and cation-exchange resin. The distribution coefficients decrease with increasing acid concentration; for REEs, a linear relationship is observed between K-d values and alpha-HIBA molarity.

The Discovery of African Dust Transport to the Western Hemisphere and the Saharan Air Layer

Joseph M. Prospero et al.

Summary: Research on wind-borne mineral dust is of great interest due to its role in climate modulation. North Africa is Earth's largest and most persistently active dust source, expected to be greatly impacted by climate change. Studies have shown the link between dust transport and African climate, with a focus on the initial discovery of African dust in the Caribbean Basin.

Development of 148Gd analysis method using stable Gd

Grzegorz Olszewski et al.

Summary: The analytical method developed aims to analyze Gd-148 in environmental and bioassay samples using anion exchange resin, extraction chromatography, and cation exchange resin. Solid samples are dissolved using alkaline fusion and calcium oxalate co-precipitation, while liquid samples are preconcentrated. The total recovery of the method when tested with natural Gd (Gd-157) using ICP-QQQ-MS reached a maximum of 75%.

No more waste at the elemental analysis of airborne particulate matter on quartz fibre filters

Monika Ogrizek et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that direct sample introduction to ICPMS by laser ablation (LA-ICPMS) provides significant advantages in terms of simplifying sample preparation procedures and avoiding the generation of chemical waste. The research shows that LA-ICPMS can successfully be applied for the determination of the elemental composition of quartz fibre filter samples.
