Induction of antibiotic specialized metabolism by co-culturing in a collection of phyllosphere bacteria

Shan Shan Qi et al.

Summary: A diverse set of bacteria live on the above-ground parts of plants, composing the phyllosphere and play important roles for plant health. Phyllosphere microbial communities assemble predictably and differ functionally from other plant organs or soil communities. The phyllosphere may be a rich resource for potentially novel molecules with antibiotic activity, but production or activity is dependent upon external signals or cues. Through studying bacteria in the phyllosphere, isolates capable of inhibiting the growth of common bacteria were identified.

Community-led, integrated, reproducible multi-omics with anvi'o

A. Murat Eren et al.

Summary: In microbiology, there is an abundance of big data, but the workflows designed to interpret the data may constrain the biological questions that can be asked. Anvi'o, a community-led multi-omics platform, is maturing into an open software ecosystem that reduces constraints in 'omics data analyses.

Sarah Vanwijnsberghe et al.

Summary: The study found multiple Paraburkholderia isolates and species in pristine forest soil, capable of degrading aromatic compounds, possibly due to the abundant presence of aromatic compounds in decomposing plant litter, reflecting microbial habitat diversity or synergistic relationships.

Phenolic acid-degrading Paraburkholderia prime decomposition in forest soil

Roland C. C. Wilhelm et al.

Summary: The study found that stimulating phenolic-acid degrading bacteria can enhance the decomposition of soil organic carbon. It was highlighted that Paraburkholderia is the main degrader of pHB, and its activity, associated with differences among tree species, is a potential mechanism in SOC cycling in forests.
