Visible Light Promoted, Catalyst-Free Radical Carbohydroxylation and Carboetherification under Mild Biomimetic Conditions

Lisa-Marie Altmann et al.

Summary: Metal and catalyst-free carbohydroxylations and carboetherifications have been achieved at room temperature through the combination of high aryl diazonium concentration and visible light irradiation. The weak charge transfer interactions between diazonium salt and alkene significantly influence the reaction course, offering potential for aryldiazonium-based radical arylations without the need for a photocatalyst or particular additive.

Enantioselective Arylcyanation of Styrenes via Copper-Catalyzed Radical Relay†

Weiwen Zhuang et al.

Summary: A copper-catalyzed enantioselective arylcyanation of styrenes using readily available anilines as aryl radical precursors has been developed under mild conditions, providing easy access to chiral 2,3-diaryl propionitriles with moderate to good enantioselectivities. This operationally straightforward reaction demonstrates broad substrate scope and high functional group tolerance, and has been successfully applied to the synthesis of a chiral AIEgen and the estrogen receptor-beta agonist (R)-diarylpropionitrile (DPN).

Visible Light Assisted Radical-Polar/Polar-Radical Crossover Reactions in Organic Synthesis

Shivani Sharma et al.

Summary: The novel concept of radical-polar crossover (RPCO) and polar-radical crossover (PRCO) reactions has emerged in recent years as a valuable tool bridging the gap between polar and radical reactions, overcoming their limitations, and improving the green quotient of reactions. The development and transformation of this area into synthetically important reactions is summarized in this review.

Recent Development of Aryl Diazonium Chemistry for the Derivatization of Aromatic Compounds

Fanyang Mo et al.

Summary: Aryl diazonium salts are essential building blocks in organic synthesis, and recent research has focused on new transformations involving the generation of radical intermediates and transition metal-catalyzed reactions using these salts. These developments significantly expand the synthetic chemist's toolbox for building aromatic carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds, providing powerful tools for synthesizing and modifying complex molecular structures.

Visible-Light-Induced Meerwein Fluoroarylation of Styrenes

Hai-Jun Tang et al.

Summary: An unprecedented approach has been developed for assembling a wide range of 1,2-diarylethane derivatives with fluorine-containing fully substituted carbon centers. The key to the success of this novel transformation lies in using aryldiazonium salts as both aryl radical progenitor and single electron acceptor, enabling a radical-polar crossover manifold.

Radical philicity and its role in selective organic transformations

Faeze Parsaee et al.

Summary: Radical philicity, the ability of radicals to act as nucleophiles or electrophiles, is an important concept in organic chemistry. Traditionally, radicals are considered electron deficient, but the term "electron deficient" can imply electrophilicity in modern literature. This discrepancy has led to misconceptions about radical behavior, as many radicals actually exhibit nucleophilic behavior. This review aims to guide the understanding and prediction of radical philicity, demonstrating that not all radicals behave as electrophiles.
