Comparing Cyanophenyl and Pyridyl Ligands in the Formation of Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Coordination Networks

Brian D. Baker Cortes et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that porphyrin derivatives are often used as building blocks for creating metal-organic coordination networks (MOCNs) on metal surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Deposition of metal atoms onto organic layers can influence the formation of structurally different MOCNs, potentially replacing pre-existing metal atoms in the porphyrin core.

On-surface preparation of coordinated lanthanide-transition-metal clusters

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: The study of lanthanide-transition metal heterometallic clusters, which are crucial for various high-tech applications, is rapidly growing. However, synthesizing clusters containing multiple lanthanide atoms remains challenging. The controlled on-surface formation of ligand-stabilized heterometallic Ce/Au clusters containing two, three, and four Ce atoms bridged by Au adatoms demonstrates an efficient strategy for the preparation and organization of multi-Ln-containing clusters.

Self-Assembled 2D-Coordination Kagome, Quadratic, and Close-Packed Hexagonal Lattices Formed from a Cyano-Functionalized Benzoporphyrin on Cu(111)

Rajan Adhikari et al.

Summary: By investigating the adsorption of 2H-TCNPTBP molecules on Cu(111) surface, three types of network structures were observed, with similar energetics. Two metal-coordinated porous structures were stabilized by cyano-Cu-cyano bonds, while the hexagonal network compensated weaker intermolecular interactions with higher molecular density, potentially influenced by kinetic stabilization. The cyano functionalization of benzoporphyrins leads to unusual two-dimensional self-assembled lattice structures.

On-Surface Synthesis of Thiophene-Containing Large-Sized Organometallic Macrocycles on the Ag(111) Surface

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: On-surface synthesis is a promising method for fabricating macromolecular nanostructures, with macrocycles being of significant interest due to their tunable topology-dependent properties. This study successfully synthesized large-sized organometallic macrocycles on the Ag(111) surface using thiophene-containing molecules as precursors. By controlling the reaction pathway, the 18-membered macrocycle was produced as the dominant product among all cyclic configurations.

Dysprosium-directed metallosupramolecular network on graphene/Ir(111)

Daniel Moreno et al.

Summary: Interest in exploiting the unique properties of lanthanides has led to the recent design of two-dimensional coordination networks incorporating f-block elements on metallic surfaces. To electronically decouple these structures from the metallic surface underneath, dysprosium-directed metal-organic networks have been formed using three-fold ligands on weakly interacting substrates such as Au(111) and graphene/Ir(111). Identical quasi-hexagonal Dy-carbonitrile coordination networks based on majority five-fold nodes were observed on both substrates, providing perspectives for the formation of lanthanide coordination networks on graphene and related sp(2) materials grown on metals.
