Particle-based simulation of cold spray: Influence of oxide layer on impact process

A. A. Hemeda et al.

Summary: High-speed cold spraying of micro-particles at temperatures below their melting point is an emerging additive process. The bonding strength and coating quality of metallic cold-spray deposits are greatly influenced by the native oxide layer on the particles and substrate. Increasing particle impact velocity improves particle/substrate bonding, and the particle-based simulation approach can effectively reproduce trends in oxide content effect and mechanisms of oxide breakup.

Bonding Mechanisms in Cold Spray: Influence of Surface Oxidation During Powder Storage

Maryam Razavipour et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of oxides on bonding in cold spray, finding that surface oxide thickness significantly influences adhesion strength and coating deposition efficiency. Various techniques were used to thoroughly study the powder surface chemistry and oxide thickness, including pull-off tests, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy.
