Effects of sample bias on adhesion of magnetron sputtered Cr coatings on SiC

P. A. Mouche et al.

Summary: In this study, chromium coatings were deposited on SiC by DC magnetron sputtering with different bias voltages. The effects of the bias voltage on the morphology, residual stress, microstrain, texture, and adhesion of the coatings were investigated. It was found that different bias voltages led to varying effects on the coating properties, highlighting the need for a balance between microcrack formation and void generation in the coatings.

Hydrothermal Corrosion of First-Generation Dual-Purpose Coatings on Silicon Carbide for Accident-Tolerant Fuel Cladding

Summary: Four different commercial coatings were deposited on high resistivity SiC for corrosion mitigation and fission gas hermeticity testing. The Cr/CrN coating quickly spalled, while the CrN coating preferentially spalled in oxygenated conditions. TiN coatings fully oxidized and spalled, but all coatings were chemically stable in hydrogen. Localized spallation was identified as a common issue across all coatings. Future improvements are recommended for better protection.

Adhesion, structure, and mechanical properties of Cr HiPIMS and cathodic arc deposited coatings on SiC

Summary: Chromium deposited by high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) and cathodic arc (CA) processes have different mechanical properties, but combining the two can create a single-phase coating with superior performance. By depositing an initial layer of Cr by HiPIMS followed by a layer of Cr by CA, a more adherent coating can be achieved, resolving some of the stress issues with CA morphology.
