Antibiotic Resistant Bloodstream Infections in Pediatric Patients Receiving Chemotherapy or Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant: Factors Associated with Development of Resistance, Intensive Care Admission and Mortality

Elio Castagnola et al.

Summary: Bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by resistant Gram-negatives in children receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy or HSCT have high occurrence rates, with previous exposure to antibiotics or colonization of resistant pathogens being possible causes. Resistant Gram-negatives are significantly associated with ICU admission and mortality, with treating centers playing an important role in the outcome of treatment. The evidence of significant center-level variations on AR, ICU admission, and mortality emphasizes the need for careful local antibiotic stewardship and infection control programs.
