Data-driven and topological design of structural metamaterials for fracture resistance

Daicong Da et al.

Summary: Data science presents promising opportunities for structural meta-materials to achieve exceptional mechanical properties. Through topological optimization and data-driven techniques, porous structures made of brittle materials can become strong and tough. By linearly controlling homogenized stress and non-periodic microstructures from a multiscale perspective, the brittle fracture properties can be tailored. These tough advanced structural metamaterials pave the way for multiscale components with exceptional fracture resistance.

Design of graded lattice sandwich structures by multiscale topology optimization

Mi Xiao et al.

Summary: Graded lattice sandwich structures (GLSSs) can achieve superior structural performances through continuously-varying lattice configurations and properties in space. This study introduces a design method using multiscale topology optimization, reducing computational burden and ensuring manufacturability. Numerical examples and bending tests demonstrate that GLSSs are stiffer and have larger natural frequencies compared to uniform lattice sandwich structures.

Self-connected multi-domain topology optimization of structures with multiple dissimilar microstructures

Yunfeng Luo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel self-connected material interpolation approach to handle the topology optimization of structures with multiple dissimilar-but-connected microstructures, ensuring good connectivity. This method allows for freely designing other microstructures apart from the interface domain, with a multi-objective optimization formulation considering both topology and lattice materials. Additionally, the mass of the interface is also taken into account as an objective to control material usage.

Computational design of 3D-printed active lattice structures for reversible shape morphing

Thomas S. Lumpe et al.

Summary: Active structures can adapt to varying environmental conditions and functional requirements by changing their shapes and properties. The combination of 3D-printed active materials with an efficient computational framework allows for the design of large-scale lattice structures that can change shape between initial and target states. This method shows generality and applicability to different problems such as morphing airfoils.

Optimal and continuous multilattice embedding

E. D. Sanders et al.

Summary: This article discusses how to achieve the design and manufacturing of spatially varying hierarchical structures through multimicrostructure topology optimization and continuous embedding technology, enabling free-form, multiscale, biomimetic structures. By directly embedding microstructures into 3D printer slices, the manufacturing process is made modular and controllable while avoiding prohibitively expensive surface representations.

Crashworthiness design of periodic cellular structures using topology optimization

Jiao Jia et al.

Summary: Periodic cellular structures are widely used in structural protection for their lightweight and excellent energy absorption characteristics, but the corresponding crashworthy design is still limited. This study uses the framework of hybrid cellular automata to optimize the crashworthiness design of periodic cellular structures, achieving maximum energy absorption by redistributing elemental internal energy and iteratively modifying local EIE target. Results show improved energy absorption compared to solid structures and classical honeycombs, with discussions on the effects of cellular number and volume gradient on crashworthiness.

Data-Driven Topology Optimization With Multiclass Microstructures Using Latent Variable Gaussian Process

Liwei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the data-driven approach for designing multiscale structures, focusing on addressing the challenge of the lack of inherent ordering or distance measure between different classes of microstructures. By incorporating qualitative and quantitative microstructure design variables as mixed-variable inputs, a new model is proposed to tackle this issue, revealing that using multiclass microstructures can improve structural performance.

METASET: Exploring Shape and Property Spaces for Data-Driven Metamaterials Design

Yu-Chin Chan et al.

Summary: Research suggests that a smaller yet diverse set of unit cells can improve the efficiency of data-driven design of mechanical metamaterials. The METASET method proposed in this study allows for efficient subset selection through the use of similarity metrics, positive semi-definite kernels, and Determinantal Point Processes. Additionally, the flexible method demonstrated that unique subsets can be distilled from a dataset of 3D unit cells created with symmetry rules.
