Molten salts in the light of corrosion mitigation strategies and embedded with nanoparticles to enhance the thermophysical properties for CSP plants

Adnan Ibrahim et al.

Summary: Solar power has shown great potential as a sustainable, dispatchable, and affordable source of energy, attracting significant attention as a viable alternative for next-generation energy usage. However, molten salt-based heat transfer fluids and thermal energy storage media face challenges such as severe corrosion and lower specific heat capacity. More effective studies on alternative salt mixtures are necessary to widen thermal stability range, enhance thermal properties, and reduce corrosion rates for use in concentrated solar power applications.

Investigating corrosion behavior of Ni and Ni-20Cr in molten ZnCl2

Simerjeet K. Gill et al.

Summary: The corrosion of Ni and Ni-20Cr in molten ZnCl2 at 593 K under argon atmosphere was investigated using cyclic polarization and electron microscopy techniques. It was found that the corrosion rates for Ni-20Cr were significantly higher than for pure Ni, attributed to selective anodic dissolution of Cr. The mechanisms of corrosion and dissolution kinetics were discussed, with grain boundary attack and formation of pore-salt network regions identified as acceleration factors.

Ni-Mo-Cr alloy corrosion in molten NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 salt and vapour

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of Ni-Mo-Cr alloy samples in salt and vapor revealed that oxidation in vapor accelerated corrosion, while corrosion in liquid molten salt was less severe. The corrosion by salt vapor should not be neglected in practical applications.

Microstructural influence of sigma phase on pitting corrosion behavior of duplex stainless steel/NaCl electrolyte couple

David D. S. Silva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of the sigma phase on pitting corrosion behavior of thermally-aged duplex stainless steel, using structural, morphological, and electrochemical characterizations. Potentiodynamic tests in 1M NaCl solution at different temperatures were conducted, along with 3D roughness image comparisons for before and after corrosion tests. The study concludes that potentiodynamic tests combined with optical profilometry are a successful approach to evaluate surface degradation mechanisms due to pitting corrosion.

First steps toward predicting corrosion behavior of structural materials in molten salts

R. Pillai et al.

Summary: This study discusses the role of alloy thermodynamics and kinetics in controlling corrosion rates of Ni-based alloys, and proposes strategies for quantifying corrosion rates. Experimental results show that alloy 230 specimens exhibit larger depths of corrosion attack compared to other alloys under similar conditions, attributed to the higher chemical activity of Cr in the alloy.

Impurity driven corrosion behavior of HAYNES® 230® alloy in molten chloride Salt

Brendan D'Souza et al.

Summary: The impurity-driven corrosion behavior of HAYNES (R) 230 (R) alloy in molten salt is influenced by temperature and impurity levels, with lower impurities leading to better corrosion resistance. Additionally, corrosion due to molten salt vapors is more severe at higher temperatures, driven by outward diffusion of chromium through the grain boundaries.
