Strong priming of soil organic matter induced by frequent input of labile carbon

Jie Zhou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of different frequencies of labile carbon inputs on CO2 production and SOM priming by adding C-14-labeled glucose to soil. The results showed that frequent labile carbon inputs led to larger priming loss of SOM and stimulated a shift in fungal community structure and functions.

Soil priming effect and its responses to nutrient addition along a tropical forest elevation gradient

Jiguang Feng et al.

Summary: The study found that priming effects can increase soil organic matter decomposition by around 44% and that priming intensity decreases significantly with elevation. Addition of N, P, or NP did not significantly change priming across elevations, but the effects of nutrient addition on priming were significantly related to initial soil nutrient availability. The conceptual framework proposed in the study suggests that stoichiometric decomposition dominates in low-nutrient availability soils while nutrient mining dominates in high-nutrient availability soils.

Arctic tundra shrubification: a review of mechanisms and impacts on ecosystem carbon balance

Zelalem A. Mekonnen et al.

Summary: Shrub expansion in the Arctic tundra is a significant response to rapid climate warming, impacting ecosystem carbon balances through various factors such as climate change, accelerated nutrient cycling, and changing disturbance regimes. The increase in tall deciduous shrubs can alter carbon dynamics by enhancing carbon uptake, affecting ecosystem respiration, and influencing feedback mechanisms that impact snowpack, permafrost, energy balance, and litter inputs. Land models need to incorporate plant traits to accurately predict tundra vegetation dynamics and carbon balances over decadal to centennial scales.
