Degradation of atrazine and bromacil in two forestry waste products

Trevor K. James et al.

Summary: The study revealed that while microbial degradation plays a role in the mineralization of herbicides, the pH of the media has a greater impact on desorption and subsequent degradation rate than the organic carbon content. The results showed that the hypothesis about organic matter content correlating with degradation rates was only partially correct, as pH and microbial activity were the main factors governing degradation rates.

Risk of pesticide pollution at the global scale

Fiona H. M. Tang et al.

Summary: Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to protect food production but also pose risks to water quality, biodiversity, and human health. A global study found that 64% of agricultural land worldwide is at risk of pesticide pollution, with 31% at high risk, particularly in areas with high biodiversity and water scarcity. High-concern regions such as South Africa, China, India, Australia, and Argentina were identified as facing high pesticide pollution risk, high biodiversity, and water scarcity issues.

Temporal integration of remote-sensing land cover maps to identify crop rotation patterns in a semiarid region of Argentina

Antonio M. Aoki et al.

Summary: The study found that in a semiarid region of central Argentina, soybean and maize are the major crops in crop rotations, with soybean monoculture being the predominant cropping system. Summer crop sequences involving soybean and maize accounted for the majority of the spatio-temporal variability.

Predicting into unknown space? Estimating the area of applicability of spatial prediction models

Hanna Meyer et al.

Summary: Machine learning algorithms are popular for spatial mapping due to their ability to fit complex relationships, but their use is limited to data similar to the training set. The study proposes a method to assess the area where a prediction model can be reliably applied, using a Dissimilarity Index (DI) to define the Area of Applicability (AOA) and map estimated performance. Simulation studies show comparable prediction errors within the AOA to cross-validation errors, emphasizing the importance of considering the relationship between DI and cross-validation performance.
