Systematic Reviews of Sport for Development Literature: Managerial and Policy Implications

Simon C. Darnell et al.

Summary: This paper reports the findings of two systematic reviews of Sport for Development (SfD) evidence, with a focus on managerial and policy implications. The reviews provide important insights into the current status of SfD literature, particularly regarding intervention diversity, the significance of scale and context, and the lack of rigorous empirical analyses. From these assessments, the paper proposes several managerial and policy implications and recommendations, including the importance of theory and context, and critical considerations of the SfD field's structure. It also suggests the importance of future research and the type of research needed in terms of policy and programming.

'The bike breaks down. What are they going to do?' Actor-networks and the Bicycles for Development movement

Mitchell McSweeney et al.

Summary: This study highlights three key factors, including government regulations, the material constitution of bicycles, and environmental conditions, that facilitate or hinder the work of BFD organizations. The potential for non-humans to cause 'frictions' and impact the action plans of BFD organizations is a key theme across the findings. The relevance of actor-network theory in achieving a widened analytical focus for more robust accounts of development contexts is also discussed.
