Thermochromic Hydrogels with Dynamic Solar Modulation and Regulatable Critical Response Temperature for Energy-Saving Smart Windows

Gang Xu et al.

Summary: In this work, a versatile thermochromic hydrogel system was developed by introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles into a crosslinked copolymer. The smart windows made from this hydrogel system showed excellent solar modulation ability, dual responsiveness, and adjustable phase transition temperature. They selectively blocked infrared light during the day while allowing ultraviolet and visible light through, benefiting indoor illumination and heat insulation. At night, the windows became opaque to protect privacy. This hydrogel-based smart window design offers a promising solution for energy-saving buildings.

Highly Sensitive Mechanoresponsive Smart Windows Driven by Shear Strain

Jianing Li et al.

Summary: A novel shear-responsive smart window with high strain sensitivity has been developed by vertically fixing a Fe3O4@SiO2 nanochains array in an elastic polyacrylamide matrix. This flexible window exhibits optical transparency at initial relaxation state, with nanochains tilting along the shearing direction as strain is applied, allowing for tunable optical states varying from 65% transmittance to 10% opacity with a small shear displacement.

Energy-efficient smart window based on a thermochromic microgel with ultrahigh visible transparency and infrared transmittance modulation

Rong Zhang et al.

Summary: The innovative V0.8W0.2O2@SiO2/PNIPAm (VSP) microgels embedded in the smart window exhibit high transparency and solar modulation abilities. The doping of V0.8W0.2O2@SiO2 helps reduce particle size and improve internal structure, while W-doping decreases the phase-transition temperature of VO2 for infrared transmittance modulation. The smart window shows significant energy-saving capabilities and potential applications in buildings and greenhouses.

A new strategy of nanocompositing vanadium dioxide with excellent durability

Xin Zhou et al.

Summary: Vanadium dioxide has been widely studied as a thermochromic smart window material, but its mediocre properties and thermodynamic instability hinder its commercialization. Nanocomposites have been found to outperform other methods in enhancing thermochromic properties, with a new type of nanocomposite showing nearly doubled Delta T-sol compared to traditional single vanadium oxide films.
