Probing thermally-induced structural evolution during the synthesis of layered Li-, Na-, or K-containing 3d transition-metal oxides

Weibo Hua et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural transformation mechanism induced by Li/Na/K-ion insertion during high-temperature solid-state reaction was revealed using in situ high-resolution synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction. The decomposition of lithium sources was identified as the most critical factor for the formation of metastable intermediates or impurities during the process of Li-rich layered Li[Li0.2Ni0.2Mn0.6]O2 formation.

New Insights into Lithium Hopping and Ordering in LiNiO2 Cathodes during Li (De)intercalation

Hang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, in situ Li-7 and ex situ Li-6 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were used to monitor lithium mobility in a LiNiO2 cathode during Li-ion (de)intercalation. Additionally, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and galvanostatic intermittent titration were employed to capture changes during the deintercalation process. The findings suggest that Jahn-Teller distortion hinders lithium diffusion and coupled motions of electrons and Li ions were discovered for the first time.

Kinetic Control of Long-Range Cationic Ordering in the Synthesis of Layered Ni-Rich Oxides

Suning Wang et al.

Summary: This study carefully characterized the formation pathway of Ni-rich layered ordered LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 and revealed the fast nonequilibrium phase transition during its formation process, which is crucial for the design and preparation of high-performance cathode materials. Understanding the kinetics of lithiation reactions and cationic ordering/disordering in cathodes may lead to new strategies for controlling the synthesis of advanced electrode materials.

Nanostructure Transformation as a Signature of Oxygen Redox in Li-Rich 3d and 4d Cathodes

Antonin Grenier et al.

Summary: LRNMC cathodes have higher energy storage capacity, but during O oxidation, nanoscale domains of lower electron density are formed within the cathode structure. The observation of nanopores during O oxidation, which is partially reversible, is a common feature in Li-rich systems like Li2RuO3 and Li1.3Nb0.3Mn0.4O2, but not present in traditional cathode materials such as stoichiometric NMC and NCA.

Polycrystalline and Single Crystalline NCM Cathode Materials-Quantifying Particle Cracking, Active Surface Area, and Lithium Diffusion

Enrico Trevisanello et al.

Summary: The NCM family of cathode active materials with high nickel content is becoming the preferred choice for high performance lithium-ion batteries. Study shows that cracking of polycrystalline particles of NCM is not only detrimental, but also helps achieve higher reversible capacities and rate capability. Optimization of CAM size and morphology is crucial for achieving good rate capability with high-nickel NCMs.
