MXene Nanosheet Templated Nanofiltration Membranes toward Ultrahigh Water Transport

Daliang Xu et al.

Summary: By utilizing a classical interfacial polymerization reaction on a two-dimensional lamellar layer of transition-metal carbides (MXene), a high-performance TFC nanofiltration membrane was successfully fabricated. The MXene layer aided in the absorption of reactive monomers, resulting in a thinner outer polyamide film and preventing the formation of polyamide in the substrate pores. This research presents a feasible strategy for producing high-performance nanofiltration membranes using two-dimensional nanosheets as templated interfaces.

Two dimensional COFs as ultra-thin interlayer to build TFN hollow fiber nanofiltration membrane for desalination and heavy metal wastewater treatment

Yongxiang Jiang et al.

Summary: An ultra-thin interlayer of two-dimensional COFs was formed on a polysulfone hollow fiber substrate surface to manipulate the interfacial polymerization process for constructing a thin film nanocomposite nanofiltration membrane with greatly improved separation performance. The membrane showed high rejection rates for various salts and enhanced water permeance under optimal conditions. Additionally, it exhibited good long-term stability and fouling resistance, indicating its potential for applications in desalination and heavy metal wastewater treatment.

MXene versus graphene oxide: Investigation on the effects of 2D nanosheets in mixed matrix membranes for CO2 separation

Feng Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that MXene-filled membranes allow for much higher loading (up to 20 wt%) compared to GO-filled membranes (up to 5 wt%). Interestingly, dry-state membranes exhibit optimal CO2 separation performance at low loading (1 wt%), while wet-state membranes show increased permeability and CO2/N-2 selectivity at higher filler loadings, contrasting with results obtained under dry conditions. The enhanced CO2 separation performance at high loading under humidification can be attributed to the hydrated interlayer channels of MXene/GO, indicating unique characteristics of MXene in wet-state mixed matrix membranes for CO2 separation.

2D Metal-Organic Framework-Based Thin-Film Nanocomposite Membranes for Reverse Osmosis and Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Feng Li et al.

Summary: The synthesized Cu-THQ MOF showed structural stability and enhanced hydrophilicity when incorporated into polyamide layers, leading to TFN membranes that broke the permeability-selectivity tradeoff by increasing water permeance and slightly enhancing salt rejection. Through different chemical and morphological characterizations, the underlying mechanism was probed, and the membranes also demonstrated improved tolerance to chlorine oxidation. With their excellent stability, the Cu-THQ MOF-based membranes further showed impressive performance in organic solvent nanofiltration involving dimethylformamide.
